How to avoid the next Silent Spring? As shown by using #chemicalstripes in @EnvSciTech, #PFAS use started before #RachelCarson wrote Silent Spring in the 60s.
...Since then #persistent chemical pollution has gotten out of control.
What do do?

1/4
Regulations for persistent substances must be #precautionary to prevent their poorly reversible accumulation in the environment, and NOT just #reactionary like the #StockholmConvention, requiring proof of - or damage from - accumulation in the environment.
2/4
#Paracelsus', “the dose makes the poison”, is an irresponsible axiom for #managing #persistent substances that accumulate in the environment. In 1962, #RachelCarson did not know that PFAS could be a poison, and in 2023, scientists are still researching the dose.
3/4
To improve #management of persistent substances, we need to:
1) improve experimental testing
2) develop in silico methods
3) strengthen regulatory options
