Binge-watched the whole of Toxic Town on Netflix last night - a UK drama based on the real life story of the town of Corby and the first court case in the world to reveal a link between atmospheric toxic waste and birth defects.

It made me think that where I used to live in there was a massive area of land in my neighbourhood that was rumoured to be a old landfill site. We used to play on it regularly and there were pipes that stuck out the ground that looked like they emitted gas.

🧵

I always wondered about what it was, but then after binge-watching this show did a little research online and found one post about it where a resident asks for information under the Freedom of Information Act.

He had done some research himself and found out that a local university used it to dump radioactive materials. As questioned by Winston Churchill (the grandson of the popular one)

WhatDoTheyKnow · Various features which look like boreholes and other intrusive features in Stretford Meadows, Urmston, Manchester - a Freedom of Information request to British Geological SurveyRecently when walking around a local outdoor recreational and area known as Stretford Meadows in Urmston, Manchester, I noticed pipes sticking out of the ground, some have regulators and some are recessed into manholes. Some of them have taps on top maybe for a gas monitor. Some have cowl/chimneys on top of them. This peaked my interest so I am reaching out to see if the BGS has any information on Stretford Meadows which could explain what these things are or any otherwise unknown historic use of the area. There is next to no information on Google, the only info can find is that it used to be a former tip called 'Lesley Road Landfill Site' and some reference to radioactive waste from parliament in the 1970's https://api.parliament.uk/historic-hansard/written-answers/1978/jun/29/radioactive-waste-lesley-road-stretford Location is here: https://gridreferencefinder.com?gr=SJ7883693923|Point_s_C|1&t=Point%20C&v=r Any info you can provide would be great, the more data the better. Yours faithfully, Rory Clements

I mean, I'm no expert about HOW TO DISPOSE OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS and maybe it was done safely...

...but interesting to know that it's just all buried down there since the 1970s and we used to play on top of that land as a kid (I was born in the 80s).
