"#WorldEconomicForum judges what is the greatest threat to humanity every year in their annual report. Used to be #Nukes were the greatest threat. Today #FossilFuels are our weapons of mass destruction. #ExtremeWeather, #droughts, #biodiversity loss etc. are now the greatest threats to humanity."

Absolutely amazing news! After bargaining on Friday was held over into Saturday, a settlement was reached for Education Workers in the 3 bargaining units Edmonton Public, Fort McMurray Public, and Fort McMurray Catholic schools! Education workers in Fort McMurray have been on strike for 5 months, and in Edmonton for over 2 months, holding the picket lines in some of the worst freezing cold that Alberta has to offer!

CUPE president Rory Gil reflects my feelings for our education workers the best:

“I’m in awe of the workers in Edmonton and Fort McMurray who stood their ground, in weather as cold as minus 51 degrees, to win a fair contract,” said Gill. “Their fortitude, their determination, and their solidarity won the day.”

“Education support workers are critical to our school system, and today they finally won the respect they deserve,” said Gill.

Education workers in Edmonton are expected to return to work on Wednesday or Thursday, after the settlement is ratified by CUPE members on Monday or Tuesday. No details will be shared until the members have had a chance to see them, but I'm sure if the bargaining team is satiated then the members will be too!

This fight should never have been needed, as having enough respect for our most important educational workers, who support all of our children, to give them a living wage should never be in question.

Yet here we are, in a fight against Capitalist interests who see human beings as a worthless commodity, and the government who seeks to cut and slash public services to privatize them and hand them over to these same profiteering interests.

These job actions have not ended. Education workers in Calgary and Parkland county have more recently joined the strike lines and have not yet reached a settlement. Strikes and labour actions are striking up all across the country, as we have reached the point of end-stage capitalism and they have taken far too much from us for far too long. This profiteering and hoarding of wealth by the few is not sustainable for the many who are struggling and unable to live. This exploitation must come to an end, and it will not end without COLLECTIVE ACTION!

In solidarity.

"We've grown up with this idea that more #FossilFuels means more prosperity which couldn't be further from the truth today. Fossil fuels are [becoming] the greatest cause of premature death on the planet. Heat waves, air pollution, toxicity in our daily lives, extreme weather & climate change."

As expected, Danielle Smith never cared about the part of the carbon tax that applied to individuals. She just used that part for campaigning. She is a puppet for the oil industry. What she wants to abolish is the industrial portion of the tax.

This is Carney’s first test. If he can win an election (possibly even an Edmonton riding) while defending the industrial carbon tax, he will send a signal that his climate credentials are legitimate.

If he can maintain that tax in government and use it to decarbonize the economy, then he will show climate leadership.

Hmmmm, increasing taxes on Big Rock, looking to re-jig the payment codes for doctors, selling provincial barrels of home grown bitumen...methinks that the Government of Alberta are in big money troubles...

"Today, we’re building a government that meets the moment. Canadians expect action — and that’s what this team will deliver. A smaller, experienced cabinet that moves faster, secures our economy, and protects Canada’s future."
- Mark Carney, newly sworn-in Prime Minister of Canada

Carney's new cabinet is down to 24 from Trudeau's 30 (a diverse cabinet with 50% women), which was already much smaller than Harper's cabinet of 40, which had included infamous names such as Jason Kenney, Tim Uppal, Candice Bergen, Erin O'Toole, and Pierre Poilievre; their definition of "small government".

@aapis Yeah, I'm nearly 50 years old and I first got my Alberta hunter's license including firearms safety course in middle school, which means that could have been as early as 12 years old (predating PAL for adults, when it was FAC instead).

I did look up the current minor's license in Alberta, and the only difference I see is lifting adult supervision, but that's already lifted for the Federal minor's license, which states that minors can use any class of firearms WITHOUT the license as long as they are supervised at 12 years old, meaning they can be unsupervised with the license (see attached pic).

"The reason I made the analogy between #FossilFuels & Nuclear Bomb #NonProliferation is because there was a time in our history where stockpiling nuclear weapons was considered what kept us safe. And that shifted over a decade, in no small part because of the campaign for nuclear treaties."

Reasonable gun control is one of the Canadian values which differentiates us from our gun-crazy neighbors to the south, and aligns us with the rest of the developed world. Incidentally, it's also listed as one of the " common shared values" which could potentially allow Canada to join the European Union (as weird as that sounds).

But the Alberta government wants us to be the 51st State.

CityNews Edmonton · Alberta hunting bill to permit 12-year-olds to use guns without adults around, among other Wildlife Act amendmentsNew legislation proposed by Alberta’s government would make hunting in a wheelchair legal and permit kids as young as 12 to use guns without adults around. Hunters would also not have to wear high-visibility clothing, although government officials say that requirement hasn’t been enforced for years. The new rules are among two dozen changes in […]

Public school support workers are *still* on strike…
A reminder to Edmontonians that support workers for EPSB are into their 9th week of strike action, stuck on the pickets instead of in schools because the GoA - which pulls the strings from behind the scenes using secret mandate letters - refuses to let the school board negotiate in good faith. Two school trustees have resigned in protest.

"Good people are stuck in bad systems everywhere. We all use fossil fuels but now we know we're in a system that doesn't work & isn't healthy for us, makes us vulnerable. It's causing fires & floods. So what are we going to do together to shift that system & make sure that no one's left behind?”
