Everyday InAccessibility - Today: Robin
"My partner and I are an international #deaf couple. We want to enjoy movies together, each with #subtitles in our own language. But it’s much harder than it should be.
Cinemas don’t offer dual subtitles, so we rely on technical solutions. Yet, the few available tools are often faulty, not cross-platform, or simply unreliable.
Why is it so difficult to learn languages and enjoy movies together, accessible?"

Oh oh oh... listen to this one.
I watched Hjem til jul (Home for Christmas) when I lived with my ex-wife. The audio is Norwegian, but since my ex-wife was watching too, the subtitles were in English.
Then I rewatched recently. I decided to put on the bokmål subtitles. (Bokmål is one of the Norwegian dialects.) I can understand some bokmål, but not a ton.
Then I thought about it more. I'm done with Bandidos, but I don't have another series with decent Spanish subtitles... except that Hjem til jul does come with a ton of other subtitles than bokmål or English.
I look, and yes! There's Latino-American subtitles.
So now I'm watching it with the audio in Norwegian and the subtitles in Spanish. It is a little weird, but it works.
It’s already been a year since my wife and I have visited #Chile - first time in South America for both of us. Many treasured memories were made, especually thanks to the friendly people and breathtaking scenery. I tried to #vlog a bit, but true to the rookie I am, I missed to capture a lot of the good stuff.

Anyway, give it a look if interested! English #subtitles are available as usual.
With the same sentiment as "You know what really grinds my gears" meme
I always watch movies with EN subtitles, and original voice. And most of the time this happens
- [Speaks in "other language"]
Then you switch to the "other language" subtitle and there they are displayed in plain sight.
WTF, WTH whyyy uuuuuuuuu.....?

#Subtitles have now been added to my latest episode, which also makes it possible to read the whole thing as a transcript — enjoy!
I want my YouTube channel to be for everyone, so today I added #subtitles to my latest show “Trump's secret Nixon plan”.
Adding good subtitles manually is time consuming, but I find that the result is way better than the A.I. subtitles YouTube autogenerates.
Enjoy! And if you know anyone who benefits from subtiles, please share!
Preventing AI Plagiarism With .ASS Subtitling https://hackaday.com/2025/01/25/preventing-ai-plagiarism-with-ass/ #ArtificialIntelligence #artificialintelligence #generativeAI #plagiarism #subtitles #youtube #poison #ass #srt #ai
Remember to make your #subtitles #ASS... not sure that subtitle is fitting, but in regards to #AI I hope more counteracts have similarly fitting acronyms.
We've been talking about making half of your #toots gibberish, to make fake content meant to confuse #generativeAI, to fill #YouTube with gunk to offset the models even more.
But hardcoding subtitles and making the text subtitles misleading is a way to go.
Viel Forschung, wenig Umsetzung
Warum eigentlich?

@sidereal I can't comment on the time taken to edit video.
As someone who occasionally transcribes: I assure readers that the time required to transcribe can be enormous — COLOSSAL — compared to the duration of the audio or AV content that must be listened to, repeatedly.
I can not speak for @howisyourdog but I typically don't bother with content that lacks captions (subtitles). Substandard accessibility is an immediate turn-off.
I want my show to be for everyone, so today I added #subtitles to my latest episode “Musk fighting MAGA — Trump's presidency in meltdown before launch.”
This means, you can now click the and select accurate, hand-made subtitles, instead of the often inaccurately generated ones. Plus avid readers can now read the whole script via the Show Transcript button.
This should also make auto-translation to other languages work much better. Enjoy!
#Arte is a #French #German #TV channel that has most of its programming online. When they have a #Hollywood #movie for example, you can watch it as a stream in French or German. Due to #licensing issues, they are usually not allowed to show the original #English version.
What they MAY do is to have an English version with French ‘burned in’ #subtitles.
So, all you have to do is to download a dubbed version and a subtitled version et voilà: original restored!
@boracius @fasnix @sarajw @kaiserkiwi granted, that's a digital library, whereas @dw_innovation's material is freely accessible and AFAIK only has a login to enable people to track their progress and see what materials they went through.
Either way, all affordable and free learning resources are valid and good, to the point that I'd say having more options is always better depending on how someone learns a languague.
Beware tonight’s #Monsterdon subtitles downloadable from archive.org (https://archive.org/details/Phantom_Planet). Bad speech-recognition material See images. sheesh
Took the liberty to de-shake Blackhawk66’s subs (https://subdl.com/s/info/23C5JNzkIc/the-phantom-planet, de-syncing +/-~1500ms throughout archive.org’s 1h22’04”-mp4-file) which should fit (more or less) good now with the material ('H.264', 489.1M)

Yea, thanks for #subtitles
I want my show to be for everyone, so today I added subtitles.

#Debian #KDE #subtitles
I am trying to #subtitle a #video. #subAegis (neither repo nor Flatpak) doesn't want to start. github.com/kitone/subtitleedit… has no tutorials and the UX is subpar.
KDE Subtitle Composer refuses to open the text file, vaguely hinting possible char encoding problem. Unfortunately KDE resources are all stubs for this app.
So, can someone help me either to get real tutorial for this KDE app, or to find something that both works and is user friendly? I am reluctant to use SAAS.
